Guilty Feet Have Got No Rhythm
after Oscar Wilde’s Salome
a live radio play staged in complete darkness
commissioned by Fiona Stuart and Richard Hawley for the 2010 Lichfield Festival
“I’ve got no need of your veils, Herod! You just watched me take off my seven veils for you. I don’t particularly feel the need for another one.”
Salome is desired by the stepfather she cannot stand and adored by the Captain of the Guard. But she is rejected by the one man she wants: the charismatic prophet who has captivated her. Humiliated, frustrated and enraged, Salome is caught up in a whirl of dirty dancing and decapitation, played out under an angry sky filled with meteor showers and crowned by a blood-red lunar eclipse.
But no-one will see any of this. To commemorate the centenary of the very first public radio broadcast, The Happiness Patrol presents a new take on Wilde’s thrilling drama with its notorious Dance of the Seven Veils, in a live performance which will be staged in complete darkness.
In a pitch black auditorium, six actors bring Salome’s scandalous story to life using live sound effects, a new translation of Wilde’s original French text, songs by Roxy Music, Dusty Springfield and Julio Iglesias – and the limitless power of your imagination.
Are you sitting comfortably? Salome’s last dance is about to begin…
